It is at the front of the neck and especially in men can be seen as the Adam's apple. The two vocal cords span the cavity of the larynx. They consist of complex muscle and tissue layers which can be adjusted in position. Air streaming from the lungs makes the vocal cords vibrate and produce the voiced tones. The more relaxed the vocal cords, the more slowly they vibrate and the pitch gets lower. If they are tenser, the vocal cords' oscillation frequency increases and the pitch gets higher.
