The first sperm to pass the membrane of the egg cell closes the entrance for all other sperms. Directly after the entry the genetic material of both gametes fuses. The chromosomes of the egg cell combine with the chromosomes of the sperm cell. The new cell -- the zygote -- starts to divide and travels through the fallopian tube down into the womb, where it nests and takes up nutrients from the uterine lining.
